Stress Management: Declare Your Freedom To........................

Stress Management

1) Create the life you desire

Two of our most underdeveloped muscles are our choice muscles and decision muscles. Begin to exercise these muscles by making decisions and choices that serve to create the life you desire. If you don't, who will?

2) Do work that you love

Some of the happiest people I know are those who get up in the morning, get to do something they love and also get paid for it. What do you love to do? How could you make a living at it? If you are not doing work you love and know you will have to be doing it for a while, what can you find in your job that you could love to do? What could you get really good at in this job that you could use later on in a job you love?

3) Keep it simple

Complicated is not better. Simpler is better.

4) Risk and make mistakes and even fail

I've heard many people say "I'd like to do so and so, but I'm afraid I'll fail." So!? Failure is not the end. Failure is simply feedback. Learn from any failure. Then take what you learn to increase your chances of success the next time.

Hockey great Wayne Gretsky said "you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take." So do your research, decide on the best plan of action, and take your shot.

5) Slow down and relax

Some time during the past two decades we began to believe that the faster we go and the busier we are, the more successful we are.

We've turned into a nation of frantic people scurrying from one place to another trying to get it all done.

Stop. Sit down. Don't do anything. Or if you simply must do something, just do one thing at a time. Just for five minutes.

Billy Joel once sang "slow down you crazy child, you're so ambitious for a juvenile."

It's good advice.

Stress Management: Holding On Vs. Dropping It
One of the dumbest things I have ever done is grab a hot iron by the bottom. We were rushing out of the house for a trip a few years back. The last time I had used it was hours ago that morning, and had left it on the ironing bourd in the bed room. I didn't knowLauren had used it just a moment before.I've never dropped anything so fast before or since! Most of you are probably a whole lot smarter than me and have never picked up a hot iron. At the same time, I bet everyone has had the experience of picking up something hot, getting burned, and dropping it right away.Would it make any sense to keep holding something hot like that? Of course not. That's why we drop them so quickly. Then why do we hold on s...(related: Stress Management)

Stress Management: Have To Vs. Get To
File this one under the category of "watch your language."The language we use when we are trying to change something simply amazes me. We say things like I can't - it's not fair - I'll never be able to do this - etc. And then we wonder why we are frustrated and don't feel so good. One of the most limiting things we say to ourselves is "I have to." Our brains hear I have to and tend to automatically rebel.Perhaps it's a holdover from childhood.A much more useful way to talk to ourselves is to change our "I have to" into "I get to."<...(related: Stress Management)

Build Your Stress Tolerance
While free-lancing for business magazines, I was assigned to write a story about a steel production company that supplied pipe to the energy industry. I was intrigued by the rigorous stress tests run on each piece of pipe. One procedure involved a "hydro test" - water was pumped inside the pipe until a pre-determined pressure was reached. The pressure was maintained for a set duration of time; weaknesses or flaws in the pipe caused leaking or bursts of water. If there were no leaks or bursts, the pipe was approved for delivery to...(related: Stress Management)
